How to Make Taco Salad Keto-Friendly

This recipe couldn’t be easier to make.I start by cooking some lean ground beef, and seasoning it with keto-friendly taco seasoning. But be careful! Most of the pre-mixed packets I’ve seen have some sugar or thickening cornstarch.

If you want to buy taco seasoning at the store, be sure to check the label for added sugars or starches. Or, if you want complete control over the carb count in this recipe, I recommend making some DIY taco seasoning with a few common herbs and spices.

To make homemade taco seasoning, mix together the following herbs and spices in a small jar, and shake to combine:

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

This mix makes a total of 3 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning, which is what you’ll need for this recipe. Feel free to scale it up and store it for other recipes.

Toppings for Keto Taco Salad

If you are looking for other keto-friendly taco salad toppings, here’s a list of ideas:

  • homemade or jarred salsa (just check the ingredients for added sugars)
  • full fat sour cream
  • sliced black olives
  • diced fresh or pickled jalapenos
  • chopped cherry tomatoes
  • leftover rotisserie chicken
  • roasted bell peppers for fajita-style taco salad
  • crispy baked cheese

I find that the salsa and sour cream combine with the other ingredients, and I don’t need to add additional salad dressing. However, if you’re looking for a good dressing for keto taco salad, check out our keto ranch dressing.
