Hannah Waddingham hailed an 'icon' after taking swig from secret flask at Baftas (2024)

We always knew she was an icon but Hannah Waddingham never ceases to outdo herself whenever she’s on our screens.

This weekend, the Ted Lasso star peaked once more at the Bafta TV Awards.

Hannah has, quite rightly, been branded a ‘legend’ for the way she reacted to losing out on a trophy during the ceremony.

The Sex Education star’s musical show, Hannah Waddingham: Home For Christmas, was nominated for the best entertainment gong at the awards, held in London on Sunday (May 12).

Sadly for Hannah, Strictly Come Dancing took home the prize and she was seen celebrating her loss in the best way after the camera panned briefly to her following the announcement.

The actress was caught grinning at the camera before she raised her bracelet, which doubled as a small flask, to her lips and took a swig, raising it again to the lens in a ‘cheers’.

Bafta viewers took to social media to say the actress was ‘just amazing’ for her flask-bracelet accessory and for taking losing on the chin like she did.

Taking to X, user RyanWhite05 wrote: ‘Hannah Waddingham drinking out her bracelet. ICON.’

Kryptonkara wrote: ‘Legend that Hannah Waddingham is, drinking out of her bracelet.’

‘Hannah Waddingham’s reaction to losing to Strictly was just amazing,’ said Mofoman360.

User cameronclark_98 added: ‘Love how the baftas to Hannah Waddingham when they announced the winners were strictly… she’s so doing it this year.’

‘Hannah Waddingham how I love you,’ chimed in scherbatskysivy.

We have no doubt that Google searches for those flask bracelets will soar tonight!

It wasn’t a night of total losses for Hannah, though.

The star of stage and screen, who started her career in the West End, made up for things later in the ceremony when coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest she co-hosted in 2023 won the award for live event coverage.

She joined members of the production team for the week’s event in Liverpool on stage to accept the award.

Elsewhere in tonight’s ceremony, which was hosted by Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, Happy Valley and Top Boy took home major prizes.

The hit BBC series – which starred Sarah Lancashire as policewoman Catherine Cawood – saw Sarah Lancashire win best leading actress for her starring role, and also won the publicly-voted memorable moment for the showdown in the series finale.

Meanwhile, Netflix series Top Boy won best drama series, with actress Jasmine Jobson given her first Bafta for her portrayal of dealer Jac in the show.

Murder drama The Sixth Commandment won best limited series and scooped best leading actor for Timothy Spall.

Strictly Come Dancing won best entertainment just ahead of its 20th anniversary, while Scam Interceptors won best daytime show, beating off competition from the likes of Loose Women and Lorraine.

It wasn’t such a bad night for Lorraine Kelly, though, as the esteemed daytime host did not leave empty-handed.

She took home the Bafta special award to honour her 40 years in broadcasting and used her speech to urge industry bosses to continue giving opportunities to ‘working-class kids’ like herself.

Despite being the most-nominated series of the year, royal drama The Crown failed to win any awards, as did fellow Netflix hit Black Mirror.
