Once you read this topical and gripping novel, it’s all you’ll want to talk about |
Already optioned for a Netflix film starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington and with a litany of critical praise under its belt, Leave The World Behindby Rumaan Alam (Bloomsbury), out today, is the Smug New Yorkers Amanda and Clay are enjoying their time at an isolated luxury holiday rental on Long Island with their two children, when an older Black couple turn up their door in the middle of the night, claiming they’re the owners. What’s more, they say there’s a power outage in New York, affecting TV, phones and the internet. It quickly spreads, paralysing people’s lives and creating chaos. “I don’t want to give too much away but it’s safe to say Alam’s third novel will have you utterly gripped– but not for the reasons you might originally think,” Gemma says. “Covering liberal racism, tech dependency, a global catastrophe (2020, that you?) and the intricacies of human connection, you’ll be dying for someone else to read it just so you can voice note them incessantly about it.” £14.99, Foyles |

Here’s proof that drinking gin really is a good thing |
With the country’s bars, pubs and restaurants closed for another three weeks (at least – insert clenched teeth emoji), our attention turns once again to our drinks trolleys at home. Looking to stock up while doing something good for the world? Thanks to these new gins that give back, you can do exactly that. If you’re a fan of travel and incredibly cute animals, Tarsier’s limited-edition Khao San Gin (£37.95, Master of Malt) will transport you to Thailand with its notes of chilli, kaffir lime and lemongrass, while 10% of profits are donated to a conservation project committed to saving the endangered tarsier, one of the world’s smallest primates. Meanwhile, the tangy, fruity Canaïma Gin (£37.45, The Whisky Exchange) not only uses native botanicals from the Amazon but 10% of profits go to NGOs that support reforestation and help improve the lives of indigenous communities. Closer to home, Hospitality Gin (£37, Hospitality Gin) launched last month to help the thousands of UK hospitality workers who have been affected by Covid-related venue closures, with all profits going to The Drinks Trust and Hospitality Action charities. The Yorkshire-made tipple is ideal for a post-work G&T with its strong hit of juniper accompanied by cardamom, honey and lavender. Cheers to that. |
