13 Winter Paleo Beef Stroganoff Recipes (1)

This beef stew recipe (of Russian origin) is now so popular that many different variations have been invented. Major chefs (including Betty Crocker and Jamie Oliver) have all put their stamp on this traditional dish.

What is Beef Strogranoff?

For those of you unfamiliar with this dish, it originally consisted of sauteed strips (or cubes) of beef topped with a mustard sauce and a small amount of sour cream.

Nowadays, beef strogranoff (or stroganov) often also contains onions and mushrooms in its sauce and is served over pasta or rice.

While this dish is not typically considered Paleo (because of the sour cream, flour that is used to dust the beef pieces, and the pasta/rice it’s served with), it is fairly easy to Paleo-ify.

So, below we’ve found 13 delicious Paleo beef stroganoff recipes for you to enjoy.

Ingredients: ground beef, olive oil, yellow onion, garlic cloves, beef stock, coconut milk, lemon juice, white button mushrooms, carrot, leek, arrowroot powder, thyme, sage leaves, bay leaf, zucchinis, sea salt, black pepper.

This grain-free Paleo stroganoff option is warming and hearty. Full of flavor and goodness, this is an ideal meal for a colder day. Just remember to lift out the thyme sprigs and bay leaves before serving.

Dairy Free Beef Stroganoff

– Domestic Soul
Ingredients: ground beef, shiitake mushrooms, chicken broth, red onion, dried parsley, white wine, vinegar, coconut oil, salt.

Traditional stroganoff tends to be overloaded with sour cream, so it is quite refreshing to find a dairy-free option. If you are not too keen on spaghetti squash, you can try serving this with zoodles (zucchini noodles) instead.

Beef Stroganoff (Gluten-free, Paleo, Primal, Perfect Health Diet friendly)

– The Domestic Man
Ingredients: strip steak, salt, black pepper, cassava flour or coconut flour, ghee or butter, shallot, white mushrooms, cloves garlic, ground mustard, ground allspice, dry white wine, beef broth, coconut cream, parsley.

This stroganoff recipe has a lovely deep heat from the mustard. There are several variations of this recipe so that it’s fully compliant with a variety of different diets – coconut cream can be used to make it dairy-free, and cassava flour or coconut flour can be used instead of rice flour to make it grain-free and Paleo.

Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff

– Balancing Paleo
Ingredients: beef stew meat, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, thyme, onion powder, mushrooms, onion, coconut cream, red wine vinegar.

Using a slow cooker for this stroganoff means that this recipe is super quick and easy to prepare! It has a truly traditional flavor through the use of the paprika and garlic, but uses coconut cream instead of the heavy sour cream. If your slow cooker tends to leave this recipe with quite a lot of liquid in it, you can either reduce this at the end or serve it on a baked sweet potato to absorb the juices.

Ground Beef Stroganoff

– The Paleo Mama
Ingredients: butter or ghee, extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil, onion, white mushrooms, ground beef, tomato paste, thyme, rosemary, garlic, arrowroot powder, beef stock, thick coconut cream, sea salt, black pepper, cauliflower rice (other options: sliced zucchini “noodles”, sweet potato noodle, or spaghetti squash).

Instead of strips of meat, this recipe uses ground beef making it ideal for serving to children. If using butter instead of ghee, be careful to make sure the milk solids in the butter does not burn. Once cooked, this Paleo beef stroganoff tastes amazing served over cauliflower rice, spaghetti squash or sweet potato noodles.

Ingredients: ghee or grassfed butter, beef stew meat, salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, onion, garlic, gluten-free worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, bone broth.

There is a depth of heat from this dish through the use of black pepper, cayenne, worcestershire sauce, and dijon mustard. If you don’t like heat, then just reduce these ingredients or omit them. Although this recipe does not call for a thickening agent, the sauce will be thick enough if you reduce it.

Paleo Beef Stroganoff with Cashew Cream

– Predominantly Paleo
Ingredients: button mushrooms, onion, ground beef, tomato paste, avocado oil, beef broth, cashews, cold water, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, sweet potatoes, garlic, ground pepper, Himalayan salt.

This recipe uses cashew cream to thicken the stroganoff, and the addition of the apple cider vinegar gives the same effect of sourness that you get from using sour cream. You can try using different types of mushrooms to vary this dish and it can be served over sweet potato noodles or zucchini ribbons.

Beef Stroganoff with Cauliflower Rice

– Horrible House Wife
Ingredients: sirloin, almond meal, coconut oil, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, mushrooms, onion, coconut milk, beef stock, arrowroot powder, cauliflower, chives.

This recipe calls for sirloin which can be expensive, so when browning the meat, make sure to do it in batches to avoid burning the meat. This recipe is perfect for serving on top of cauliflower rice for a lower carbohydrate and lower calorie meal. If you haven’t tried cauliflower rice before, you’ll be shocked by how easy it is to make and how similar it is in taste and texture to regular rice. You can also garnish this meal with chopped green onions to give it a lovely finish.

Simple Buttery Paleo Beef Stroganoff

– Smile Sandwich
Ingredients: sirloin steak, butter or other cooking fat, onion, mushrooms, garlic, dry white wine, beef stock, coconut milk, fresh parsley, sea salt, ground black pepper.

In another twist on this classic dish, this Paleo beef stroganoff recipe uses white wine. Never be afraid to use wine in cooking because the alcohol burns off during the cooking process. Perhaps omit this though if you are making this recipe for children. This stroganoff looks delicious and tastes as good! Try to use the best cut of meat you can afford if you are using sliced beef.

8 Ingredient Paleo Beef Stroganoff

– Ancestral Nutrition
Ingredients: skirt steak, mushrooms, onion, butter, bone broth, arrowroot flour, sour cream OR coconut cream, salt, pepper.

This recipe uses a cheaper cut of meat, but it tenderizes when marinated in apple cider vinegar. This also adds a ‘wine’ flavor to this stroganoff. Like a lot of Russian dishes, this one is a hearty and filling meal even when made healthier and Paleo. If you don’t have bone broth, it is perfectly okay to use chicken or vegetable broth.

– The Healthy Foodie

Ingredients: beef, onion, clove garlic, Himalayan or fine sea salt, black pepper, water, Dijon mustard, rosemary, mushrooms, frozen pearl onions, fresh parsley, yogurt, arrowroot flour, yellow and green zucchinis.

This recipe has all the flavor and creamy texture of a traditional stroganoff. If you prefer not to use beef you can even try chicken or turkey instead. The same versatility shines when it comes to the veggies. If you have a problem with pearl onions, simply substitute cherry tomatoes, or why not try olives instead? Also, instead of Greek yogurt, use Paleo options like coconut cream or coconut yogurt or cashew cream instead.

Beef Heart Stroganoff

– The Healthy Foodie
Ingredients: beef heart, balsamic vinegar, bacon, Himalayan salt, black pepper, onion, mushrooms, bone broth, Dijon mustard, fresh rosemary, tapioca starch, zucchinis, fresh parsley.

This recipe suggests using beef heart! It works just as well as using sirloin. The balsamic vinegar gives this dish a superb depth of flavor and again you have the versatility to use any type of mushrooms you prefer.

Beef Stroganoff with Celeriac Noodles

– Inspiralized
Ingredients: sirloin steak, extra virgin olive oil, onion, button mushrooms, garlic cloves, red wine, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, paprika, dried thyme, celeriac, coconut milk, parsley.

This is a rich and flavorsome recipe which uses coconut milk instead of sour cream making it a whole lot more Paleo. This is an easy dish as it is cooked in one pot, therefore cutting down on the washing-up! Another special aspect of this dish is its use of celeriac noodles, which helps to absorb some of the creaminess in this dish.
